Organic Farm Manager

Key Responsibilities

1. Prepare annual and seasonal cultivation plans, crop calendars and production budgets.
2. Manage organic crops including spices, herbs, coconut, cinnamon, pepper, turmeric, ginger, moringa, fruits and vegetables.
3. Plan land preparation, planting, irrigation, fertilisation, weed control, harvesting and crop rotation.
4. Maintain soil fertility through composting, mulching, green manure and other approved organic practices.
5. Monitor crops regularly for pests, diseases and nutrient deficiencies.
6. Apply organic and integrated pest-management methods without using prohibited chemicals.
7. Recruit, supervise and schedule permanent workers, casual workers and contractors.
8. Allocate daily tasks and monitor employee attendance, productivity and work quality.
9. Train employees in organic farming, harvesting, hygiene and workplace safety.
10. Maintain complete farm records for seeds, planting materials, inputs, field activities, labour, harvesting and yields.
11. Ensure compliance with EU Organic and other applicable certification standards.
12. Maintain full product traceability from the field through harvesting, processing and storage.
13. Prepare the farm and its records for organic certification inspections and customer audits.
14. Supervise harvesting, cleaning, drying, grading, packing, storage and transportation.
15. Ensure that products meet the company’s quality and food-safety requirements.
16. Manage farm machinery, tools, irrigation systems, wells, water tanks, buildings and vehicles.
17. Control stocks of seeds, fertilisers, packaging materials, fuel, tools and spare parts.
18. Obtain quotations and coordinate the timely purchase of approved farm materials.
19. Monitor production costs, labour expenses, crop yields, losses and profitability.
20. Submit weekly and monthly production, labour, inventory and financial reports to management.
21. Coordinate with the processing, quality-control, purchasing, sales and export departments.
22. Protect the farm’s land, crops, machinery, livestock and other company assets.
23. Implement sustainable practices such as water conservation, renewable energy, biodiversity protection and waste management.
24. Manage livestock and integrated farming operations where applicable.
25. Perform any other farm-management duties assigned by the Managing Director.

Key Performance Indicators

Performance will be assessed according to:

1. Achievement of planned crop yields and production targets.
2. Production cost per crop and overall farm profitability.
3. Quality and marketability of harvested products.
4. Compliance with organic certification and audit requirements.
5. Accuracy of farm, inventory and traceability records.
6. Labour productivity and staff management.
7. Reduction of crop losses, wastage and equipment downtime.
8. Proper maintenance of land, machinery and farm infrastructure.

Required Qualifications and Experience

1. Diploma or bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Organic Agriculture, Crop Science, Agribusiness or a related field.
2. At least five years of practical farming experience, including two years in a supervisory or farm-management position.
3. Practical knowledge of organic crop production, soil management, irrigation, pest management and harvesting.
4. Experience with organic certification, farm inspections and traceability systems is highly desirable.
5. Ability to manage workers, budgets, machinery, materials and multiple cultivation projects.
6. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, email and digital record keeping.
7. Good written and spoken Sinhala and English. Tamil language skills would be an advantage.
8. Valid driving licence and the ability to operate or supervise farm machinery are preferred.
9. Willingness to live near or regularly travel to the farm.
